The Godalming Youth Orchestra was founded in 1979 by a group of parents keen for their children to have the experience of playing in a good orchestra.
Our conductor since 1996 is David Wright who is Head of Brass and a Housemaster at Charterhouse. He inspires the players with his enthusiasm, his musical teaching skills and his humour.
The orchestra has a membership of around 40 players aged between 8 and 16 who join when they are of grade 4 standard or above. Rehearsals take place at Charterhouse School in Godalming from 9.30am to 10.45am on Saturday mornings during the Autumn and Spring terms. Public concerts are given at the end of each term.
We practice a selection of music each term and hope to perform all of it at the end of term concert. We have an extensive library of music, some of which has been specially written or arranged for us, and we have given several first performances of new works including Malcolm Arnold’s”Children’s Suite” at the Farnham Festival and “From Glasgow” a piece by David Stone composed for David Wright when he took up his position as our conductor.
